Harlan County LakeWater plays an integral part of the Heritage Byway. Historically, wagon trains followed rivers and streams on their westward trek. Today, experience the area's most powerful waterway- thte Missouri River- aboard the Spirit of Brownville. This boat provides tours as well as dinner and entertainment cruises.

Along the route you will also find numerous outstanding recreational lakes. Harlan County Lake- the state's third largest lake- provides an array of boating and fishing opportunities. Other popular lakes include Burchard Lake and Rockford Lake.

For hiking/biking enthusiasts, the Byway affords many opportunities to experience the great outdoors. From short trails leading to Nebraska's hidden treasures, to longer trails such as Steamboat Trace, hikers and bikers are sure to find a path for them.

RV travelers can find locations in many towns along the route offering facilities and local activities at reasonable rates.

For hunters and bird watchers, the Byway's diverse landscape provides a variety of wildlife. From the timber-covered landscape of the east to the high plains of the west, unique opportunites abound.
